Professional cleaning vs a quick blast
There is a difference between owning a pressure washer and restoring a driveway.
Plenty of driveways can be made to look wet and briefly cleaner. Restoring one so it still looks right next summer is a different job — it depends on pressure control, chemistry, where the dirt goes and how the joints are finished. This is what we do differently, rather than a comment on anyone else's work.
Pressure is a tool, not the method
Turning a lance up until something happens is the quickest way to pit block faces, strip jointing sand and tear the aggregate out of tarmac. We use rotary surface cleaners at a pressure matched to the surface, and let dwell time and chemistry do the work that pressure shouldn't.
Where the dirt ends up matters
A driveway holds years of silt. Blasted at the wrong angle it lands on render, fences, garage doors, cars and the neighbour's wall. We work in a controlled direction, protect what needs protecting, and rinse the whole area down properly at the end — including the pavement and gulley, not just the driveway.
Treatment, not just washing
Water removes what you can see. It doesn't kill the algae, moss and lichen rooted into the surface, which is why an untreated driveway greens over again within a season. Every driveway we clean gets a professional biocide post-treatment at a controlled dilution, left to dwell so it carries on working after we've gone.
Joints and re-sanding
Jointing sand does structural work on block paving. Cleaning inevitably removes the old, contaminated sand — leaving it out is what causes rocking blocks and fast weed return. We refill with fresh kiln-dried sand, brushed and vibrated in, quoted separately so you only pay for it where it is needed.
Different surfaces, different methods
Block paving, concrete, imprinted concrete, resin-bound and tarmac all behave differently under pressure and chemistry. Using one setting for all four is how driveways get damaged. We identify the surface at survey and set the method around it.
Finishing the job
The last half hour is the part most people notice. Edges cut in, borders and beds rinsed, silt cleared from the road edge, tools away, before and after photographs sent. Owning a pressure washer and professionally restoring a driveway are two different things.

Tarmac
Restoring tarmac instead of replacing it.
Most tired tarmac drives are not failing — they have greyed as the bitumen oxidises, with moss and algae taking hold along the shaded edges. That is a surface problem, not a structural one.
Where the base is sound, we clean at low pressure, treat with biocide and — on suitable surfaces — apply Smartseal Tarmac Restorer to bring back a deep, even black. It costs a fraction of relaying, and it can be repeated in years to come. Where the tarmac has genuinely broken up, potholed or lost its base, we will say so rather than sell a clean that will not last.

How long does a driveway take?+
Most domestic driveways are completed in a single day, including post-treatment. Larger driveways or driveway + patio combos can run into a second day.
Do I need to be home?+
No — as long as we have access to the driveway and an outside tap, you don't need to be there. We'll send before and after photos when we finish.
How often should a driveway be cleaned?+
Most driveways in Oxfordshire & Bucks benefit from a professional clean every 18–24 months. Shaded or north-facing drives may need it sooner.
Do you offer sealing?+
Yes — sealing is an optional add-on on suitable surfaces once fully dry, usually on a return visit. It slows re-growth and makes the next clean easier.
Why do weeds keep coming back through block paving?+
Weeds germinate in the joints, not under the blocks. Once the kiln-dried sand has washed or blown out, the open joint holds moisture, dirt and windblown seed — perfect growing conditions. Clearing the joints, applying a dwell-time biocide and refilling with fresh kiln-dried sand removes the growing medium, which is why a properly finished driveway stays clear far longer than one that has simply been blasted.
Why does block paving need re-sanding after cleaning?+
Cleaning the joints properly removes the old, contaminated sand along with the moss and weed roots in it. Sand does structural work on block paving — it locks the blocks together so they don't rock, shift or spread. Refilling with fresh kiln-dried sand, brushed and vibrated in, restores that interlock and gives a properly finished look. We quote re-sanding separately so you only pay for it where it is genuinely needed.
Can pressure washing damage a driveway?+
It can, if the pressure is uncontrolled or the wrong tool is used. Too much pressure on block paving strips jointing sand and can pit the block face; on tarmac it can tear loose the surface aggregate. We use rotary surface cleaners at a pressure matched to the surface, keep the lance off the joints, and let the chemistry do the work the pressure shouldn't.
Should chemicals or biocide be used on a driveway?+
Yes, used correctly. Water alone removes what you can see; it does not kill the algae, moss and lichen rooted in the surface, so green returns quickly. We apply a professional biocide at a controlled dilution as a post-treatment, left to dwell so it keeps working after we leave. We don't use household bleach — it lightens staining briefly and kills nothing.
How long before I can park on the driveway again?+
On a straightforward clean you can normally park again the same day once the surface has dried off. If we have re-sanded the joints, we ask you to keep off for a few hours and avoid sharp turning manoeuvres for the first day or two so the sand can settle. If a tarmac restorer or sealer has been applied, we'll give you a specific curing time on the day.
Is restoring tarmac worth considering before replacement?+
Often, yes — if the tarmac is structurally sound. Surface greying, algae and moss are cosmetic problems. Where the base is intact and there is no significant crumbling or potholing, a low-pressure clean, biocide treatment and Smartseal Tarmac Restorer can bring back a deep, even black for a fraction of what relaying costs. Where the tarmac has genuinely failed, we'll tell you so rather than sell you a clean that won't last.
